Have Mercy on the Refugee

The footprints on the white sand
Are almost washed away
There's an open boat down on the rocks
On the far side of the bay
The sun comes up, a dog is catching something on the wind
But the beach is empty now and they're all gone

A car ride to the trailer that
Is parked beside the road
The driver's spending too long
Buying something from the store
Hearing every footstep as the people pass outside

And if these roads could talk
About the journeys they have seen
The desert roads, the frontiers
The places in between
And then the same old story
There is no welcome here
But if you only knew about
The things that they've been through
Would you
Have mercy on the refugee

It's winter in the city
Five below outside
Peace on earth goodwill to all
Songs and Christmas Lights
The Salvation Army band is playing loud
But there's not much joy or comfort in this town

And if these roads could talk
About the journeys they have seen
The desert roads, the frontiers
The places in between
And then the same old story
There is no welcome here
But if you only knew about
The things that they've been through
Would you
Have mercy on the refugee
